Cataract Surgery: Understanding And Managing Side Effects

Cataract surgery is one of the most common eye procedures performed in the United States every year. It is safe and relatively free from serious side effects or complications. Most side effects are mild and resolve quickly. However, if you are planning to have cataract surgery, understanding and managing side effects will prevent any anxiety.

You May Have Dry Eyes

One of the most common side effects post cataract surgery is having dry eyes. If you had dry eyes prior to the surgery, you most definitely will afterward. Some nerves that induce tears are affected during surgery, and they take a while to heal.

Purchase over-the-counter preservative-free moisture drops to soothe your eyes in the interim. Ask Hecht Eye Institute for a prescription eye drop if over-the-counter types are not helping. Always wait at least 5 minutes before inserting one type of eye drop and another to allow the drops to properly get into your system.

You May Have Blurry Vision

It is quite common to have some blurred vision after cataract surgery due to inflammation and swelling. It can last for several weeks, but will resolve if you use the anti-inflammatory drops given by Hecht Eye Institute as prescribed.

It is not something to be concerned about unless it lasts beyond a week after surgery.

Your Eyes May Feel Scratchy

Sometimes patients feel like something is in their eye after cataract surgery. This is perfectly normal and should go away in about a week. If you suffer from dry eyes, it could take a bit longer.

You May Have Glare And Halos

This side effect is more common if you have multifocal lenses inserted. This is known as dysphotopsia and it occurs more frequently at night or in dim light situations. Red Spots On Eyes

You can expect to see some red spots on the white parts of the eye after cataract surgery. These harmless broken blood vessels will disappear on their own.

Nausea

IV anesthesia can cause a nauseated feeling after surgery. It should resolve within a day or two. Drink plenty of water and have a healthy meal after surgery.

Floaters In Your Vision

Tiny floating spots can appear in your vision after cataract surgery. They are nothing to worry about unless they are accompanied by flashes of light and a shower of floaters. Call Hecht Eye Institute immediately if this rare side effect should occur, as it could be a retinal detachment.

Light Sensitivity

This is another common side effect of cataract surgery. Hecht Eye Institute can prescribe an eye drop to help with this. In addition, wear a pair of quality sunglasses when out in the sun. If the sensitivity is extreme, be sure to call our office.

Droopy Eyelid

This can sometimes happen after having cataract surgery. It will slowly improve by itself over a six month period, but if not, talk with Hecht Eye Institute.
